Abstract

This study examines the urban regeneration of Astana, Kazakhstan’s capital, through the interconnected dimensions of sustainability, social transformation, and economic development. It evaluates the strategic initiatives guiding the city's evolution into a modern metropolis, identifying both achievements and persistent challenges. Astana’s architectural modernization, shifting social structure, and economic diversification efforts are analyzed to provide a comprehensive perspective on its urban transformation. A key focus of Astana’s development strategy is environmental sustainability, with significant investments in green buildings, energy-efficient infrastructure, and renewable energy integration. Urban planning policies prioritize eco-friendly practices, including water management and the expansion of green spaces. Concurrently, the city’s economic revitalization is reinforced by infrastructure improvements designed to stimulate trade and industrial growth, attracting substantial foreign and domestic investment. The enhancement of transportation systems and the establishment of business hubs contribute to Astana’s emergence as an international center for commerce. However, rapid population growth, energy demands, and socioeconomic disparities present ongoing obstacles that require adaptive urban policies. Balancing modernization with inclusivity remains essential for sustainable urban development. Through strategic planning and investment, Astana continues its trajectory toward becoming a globally recognized smart city, setting a precedent for urban transformation in dynamic metropolitan environments.
