Comprehensive Ethnobotanical Study and Health Implications of Traditional Indonesian Health Beverages

Abstract

Plants are one of Indonesia’s precious assets. Indonesia has rich biodiversity within numerous potential benefits, one of which is their use as medicinal plants. These plants are often transformed into traditional health beverages, which are crucial for preserving local wisdom. This study aims to analysing and identifying various traditional health beverages in Indonesia, the species of plants used, their compounds, and their benefits. The methodology involves semi-structured interviews conducted through online questionnaires. Based on responses from 115 informants across 12 provinces and 50 cities, the study identifies 19 types of beverages, including Jamu Turmeric, Wedang Uwuh, Sekoteng, Bajigur, Jamu beras kencur, Kunir asam, Wedang Ginger, Susu Ginger, Madu bawang lanang, Teh bunga telang, Teh bunga rosela, Bir pletok, Bandrek andaliman, Jamu with lemon juice, Madu lebah trigona, Wedang ronde, wedang sereh, and Buyung Upik. A total of 26 plant species are used as the basic ingredients for these traditional beverages, which are classified into 15 families. The community continues to consume traditional health beverages, as they are still believed to be effective and safe.
